Running of Sheep with Red Socks
Ever see a flock of sheep running in bright red socks? You can at the Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces!
Since its inception in 1990, the Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces has been the Upper Hunter's premier event. It is a celebration of agriculture that showcases Merino sheep and all that it brings to the community. Drawing spectators from near and far, people can witness traditional shearing demonstrations, livestock competitions, wool auctions, displays of working dogs in action and of course, the running of the red-socked sheep.
The idea for the running of the sheep was born when one of the sponsors couldn't give money to the festival, but offered up socks instead. They decided to put them on some lucky sheep in a procession down Merriwa's main street and it has become an iconic part of the festival ever since.
So, if you're in town for the June long weekend, don your red socks and come join in the celebration.
